Forums - Sony - Top Five Sony Video Game Franchises

Whether through high times with the Playstation and Playstation 2 or through the low time with the Playstation 3, Sony has its fair share of memorable franchises throughout the years. Not to mention that they continue to create new ones like Killzone, Resistance and LittleBigPlanet on a regular basis. While those are too new to be considered, Sony has enough to fill in the list. Here are the top five franchises from Sony.

5. Twisted Metal

When you think vehicular combat, you will think of Twisted Metal. The franchise basically popularized the unique genre with its great power-ups, exquisite map layouts and unique characters (including the infamous ice cream clown, Sweet Tooth). Although the third and fourth games were horrible (mainly due to being made by different developers), the rest of the franchise easily makes up for it.

4. Ico and Shadow of the Colossus

While having just two games (supposedly a third game is being developed on the Playstation 3) is hardly considered a franchise, the Ico and Shadow of the Colossus combination is considered some of the most underrated (yet influential) video games ever created. This is because both games in this franchise took interactive immersion to the limits. They are about as close as any video game can get to being works of art.

3. Trio of Platformers: Jak, Sly and Ratchet& Clank

Despite the fact that it is impossible to top the greatness of Mario, Sony came pretty close with its trio of platforming franchises. Naughty Dog's Jak, Sucker Punch's Sly and Insomniac's Ratchet & Clank are among the best 3D platformers ever created. All three franchises offer their own unique take on the genre and, as a result, left their mark. It's hard to pick just one from the group since all of them are top quality; thus, the three platformer franchises deserved the same spot on the list.

2. God of War

One of the newest Sony franchise is also one of the best. God of War pushed Sony's systems to their limits with incredible graphics. Not to mention that the hack-and-slash bloody gameplay is among the best action games has to offer. Finally, it is hard not to love a game set in Greek mythology. The games do everything so well that it is easy to forgive the little short comings. Despite debuting in 2005, the God of War franchise has quickly become one of the most popular franchises in the entire industry.

1. Gran Turismo

Racing games were never the same once the original Gran Turismo was released. The game and its subsequent sequels set the standard for what a racing simulator should be: realistic graphics, accurate handling and hundreds of cars to try out. Everything in the franchise, even the smallest of details, is crafted to perfection. The fact that over 50 million copies of the Gran Turismo games were shipped worldwide is a testament to the franchise's quality and popularity. Without a doubt, Gran Turismo is the ultimate Sony franchise.

I agree with the top 5, but I can see Uncharted climbing into that list after Uncharted 2 is released.

Yeah i pretty much agree with it.

It should be 1. GT 2. GoW 3. R&C 4. J&D 5. SC because no. 3 is just 3 franchises in one.

Pixel Art can be fun.

mmmmm, SOCOM should probably be in there, and Jak, Ratchet and Sly can't just count as one

For me SotC alone owns every other franchise on that list.
It may have its flaws but the experience was much more unique compared to the other (non Team Ico games) on that list.
It felt new/fresh which is surprising after playing videogames for a few decades.
