Forums - Microsoft - Alan Wake will be HUGE!

Are those screens XBOX 360 or PC version ? I read somewhere that the pics released were 1080p downscaled to 720p for internet viewing ( guys at remedy said this). They also said it would support 720p on 360.
Graphics are awesome nevertherless. Better than Gears 2? Better than Killzone 2? not sure about those 2 questions.

Alan Wake will do good for a new IP, but it won't be HUGE

The only thing that does HUGE are FPS's and Blizzard games.

Shots look amazing. But as with all multiplatform games that have a PC version lets wait till we know how the 360 version looks right?

I think Alan Wake looks pretty damn good considering the resources. Even though it is being published by Microsoft, Remedy funded the game themselves for a while. Where are the extra 2 years of development time for Killzone 2 coming from?

The first article shows that Remedy Entertainment were working on Alan Wake back in May 05' (almost certainly well before that, as screenshots of the game were shown at E3.)

At E3 all that was shown of Killzone was the infamous CGI trailer.

We know that Guerrilla were still working on Killzone: Liberation until October of 2006. The dev 'Motherh' has even stated in the Killzone 2 blog that pre-production of Killzone 2 only went into full swing after Liberation.

Revised rough timeline:

Alan Wake: 4 years 3 months development (given that it gets a fall 09' launch.)

Killzone 2: 3 years 9 months (although it's probably less.)

Even that's being very generous to Alan Wake and quite strict with the Killzone 2 timeline.

The budgets for the games I know are complete specualtion on your part. Very few games have had confirmed budgets this gen. Do you have any sources for them?

Motherh has also stated that Guerrilla were hiring staff late into the Killzone 2 development cycle. Can I have a source for the number of Remedy Entertainment employees?

 

What I posted was gathered from different sources online. Most of the information comes from Remedy themselves. If you post on the official Alan Wake forum with a question, it will be unusual if a representative from Remedy does not reply.

Killzone 2 development time: "In August of 2004 this editor visited the offices of Guerilla in Amsterdam. There, team members admitted that Killzone 2 development was well underway." (Source) Killzone 2 began without a platform. If Sony hadn't gone to them, it could have been for the PC or another platform. There is an interview in which GG admits to working on Killzone 2 well before Killzone 1 was finished. Sadly, I was not able to find that interview. The E3 trailer was composed of art Guerilla already had made. Most games don't have art of that level until it's been in development for a while.

Alan Wake development time: Alan Wake was announced around 4 years ago. However, I posted active development. Remedy took a break from Alan Wake to purse other ventures and seek a publisher when funding was low. The actual development time is in the 3 year range.

Alan Wake budget: Last year Remedy posted that Alan Wake's  "production costs have exceeded 7 million dollars." I simply added 2 million since the original statement. Considering that Remedy only has around 30 employees, I think it is perfectly resumable. Remedy games usually take a while but are produced with low budgets.

Killzone 2 budget: Although I can't find any interviews with a 100% concrete declaration of the budget, if you look around you'll see insiders state the budget ranges from 30 - 60 million as well as claims from Sony execs saying Killzone 2 has a budget unlike any other game before. Also, simple math

130 employees * 50k a year * 5 years = 32,500,000. The workforce alone breaks 32 million dollars. Granted, this is not completely accurate. In fact, it is a bit below since game developers make much more than 50,000 a year but I used 50k to leverage lower payed employees. Also, GG themselves claim they have over 130 employees (Source)

I hope I provided enough proof to backup my claims. Let me know if you're still not convinced, I'll be more than happy to PM you all the details. Only thing I love more than tracking game sales is tracking a game's development.

Interesting, that is even longer than I thought.  Well underway in August of 04.

Able to create an AAA title (+90% on Gamerankings) selling over 3 million copies for just $10 million.

I believe Alan Wake will be GOTY.



Alan Wake will be bigger than huge. It will redefine the survival horror genre in the same way that RE2 did.... I hope. One thing is for certain though, the game itself is shaping up nicely. I'm not sure if the trailers and screenshots we've been seeing are from the PC or 360 build of the game, but it looks magnificient..MUCH MUCH better than when it was first revealed.

Man I really hope Microsoft will release some new info for this game soon, although I actully hope they don't show any true gameplay footage; having the combat system be a surprise, and as is Remedy's way, a no doubt amazing surprise, would be awesome.
