Forums - Sony Discussion - What Would You Do If You Were Sony?

I thougt about what I would do, if I was in Sony's shoes?

I don't think this is THE answer, but it would be a start in making the PS3 seem like a good value. I would be EXTREMELY aggresive and immediately take 3 drastic steps:

1) Add PS2 B/C via emulatiuon
2) Include a certificate for 3 Blu Ray discs (only Sony titles) with every PS3 purchase
3) Include an aggressive "Game Collection" with every console sold:

Cheapest Model: 8 Games: 1 3rd party game, 4 1st party games, 3 PSN games
Expensive model:10 Games: 1 3rd party game, 6 1st Party Games, 3 PSN Games

Would the PS3 seem like a better value if Sony included these first party titles in all regions, and add the the third party title listed below that depending on the region?

Cheaper Model: Motorstorm, Ratchet & Clank Future : Tools of Destruction, Uncharted : Drake's Fortune, Hot Shots Golf:Out of Bounds, Echochrome (PSN), Wipeout HD (PSN), Jeoprady (PSN)

Expensive Model: Little Big Planet, Gran Turismo 5 Prologue, Motorstorm, Ratchet & Clank Future : Tools of Destruction, Uncharted : Drake's Fortune, Hot Shots Golf:Out of Bounds, Echochrome (PSN), Wheel of Fortune (PSN), Wipeout HD (PSN)

Add in NA : Madden 09 (or even 08)
Add in Others : Fifa 09 (or even 08)
Add in Japan : Fifa 09 (or even 08) or Super Street Fighter 2 Turbo Remix (PSN 3rd Party)

Obviously Wheel of Fortune and Jeoprady would not work in all regions, but the point would be to add a mix of games that would appeal to everyone in the family, taking a step to make PS3 a console for everyone (which is why I included Blu Ray discs). Have Sony titles keeps the cost to a minimum, and adding the largest 3rd party sports franchise in each region adds to the appeal (and encourages the sale of more controller$).

The upside, for the price of the PS3, you get B/C (all of your old games), a 3 movie collection and a well rounded new game collection from day 1.

There is a downside, a new purchaser would not need to immediately purchase games, but this would get a lot of PS3's out without the need for an immediate a price cut.

If you had not purchased a PS3, and this deal was limited in time (3-4 months tops), would you reconsider?

What you are saying would make even bigger losses for Sony on PS3 consoles sold. Sony is breaking even per PS3 sold at the moment. Including PS2 BC and 3 Blu-Rays would cost Sony more money. Sony is not in a good financial position at the moment. Making more losses to gain growth in market share is financial disaster.

If B/C was done through software, the only cost to Sony would be PS2 sales, which SHOULD turn into PS3 sales with this deal. The PS2 has had dramatic drops in recent months, I think it might be time to focus on the future. I do know they make a good deal of money from PS2 hardware sales, but it's better than losing $100 MORE dollars with a PS3 price cut.

The real cost is the third party titles, but Fifa included in Europe could move a lot of consoles. All the other titles belong to Sony, and the Blu Ray would be limited to pictures made by Sony.

I have heard PS2 BC can not be done through software. It is only possible through PS3 hardware.

There has been much speculation in the gaming media that Sony has it in development, and quite a bit that it is already ready. They are just not ready to lose the profitability of the PS2 so they have not made it available.

If it is not possible, they could do this minus the B/C....

At this point Sony's best option is unforunately to keep doing as they have been. They need to take their medicine and keep working on lowering PS3 costs so they can at least start turning a profit.

They also need to accept that this generation is lost, and their 10 year plan needs to be scuttled, even if unofficially. This isn't to say the PS3 must be abandoned like the Saturn - the system still has life in it, and they need to make sure it continues to be seen as a viable franchise, no matter where they finish.

They must rethink the "home entertainment" philosophy that put them in this hole and plan on striking back next gen with an affordable console that does what Playstation 1 and 2 did best - offer a wide variety of games for all types of gamers. That also means going after Nintendo and making their blue ocean a deeper shade of red.

I would buy nintendo shares while the stock market is down. If they focus their attention on that in a few generations time they might border on actually owning nintendo. but im sure there are legal implications preventing this, but it would be a good move I reckon :)

If at first you don't succeed, you fail

I'd only do 3 things.

  • Buy out Level 5 Studios as a 1st party company, and buy out "Certain" Final fantasy XIII games excluding Versus XIII for obvious reasons, also Fully fund and publish a Final Fantasy VII Remake and/or sequel World-Wide for the PlayStation 3.
  • Reduce the minimal price to 250 dollars. And add a greatst hits title (by the buyer choice) along with a Sixaxis controller (left ovetr sixaxiss)
  • Create a new team from remnats of other great teams to form a Sony RPG team tis named "Seraphim Sony" :P ...hey... i can dream cant i?

Establish PS3 HDTV bundles with as many TV manufactureres as possible, increasing the penetration of the PS3 as the Blue Ray player of choice. Market this angle as much as possible.

Bundle the system with free network games/movies or credits (a free $100- $200 in PSN store content would do the trick and cost them much less than bundles with physical media)

Have competitions/offer incentives to employees of Gamestop and large electronics stores for the most PS3 systems and software sold.

Spread rumors about the 360 having a RROD resurgance. Travel around major cities and offer a few thousand 360 consumers a new PS3 for their RROD 360 and advertise to the world that you are doing it.

Buy up exclusives from Epic, Square, Konami, etc. in exchange for advertising dollars, bundles, royalty cuts, and free internal development support.

Have large game events, competitions, and shows to promot their new exclusive releases similar to the Halo event.

etc, etc....

I think the real question is what are they doing? It's almost like they refuse to put up a fight???

I would say that developer acquisitions and securing third-party exclusives wouldn't be the wisest move in their current situation.

I would have to say swallow my pride and accept defeat knowing that chasing the competition with price cut after price cut is not a profitable solution when your competition has WAY deeper pockets.

They need a first party to create an innovative 'it' item...something with wide appeal that everyone must have, not just another Kill Zone game for the enthusiasts. They have a great list of exclusives lined up for next year but none that entice anyone but hardcore gamers - which sadly seems to be where the money is. I think they're guilty of asking the fans what they want instead of asking people who feel that they can live without it 'how can we get you to buy a PS3?'
