Forums - Sales Discussion - AAA game sales ratios by console (Who's hardcore? :P)

please help me fill in missing data if you can find it.
GC 360 wii and ps3 versions will be entered at a later time

A cursory check was done for ps3 and Wii
PS3 stands at 16/17 and Wii stands at 22/40

AAA games were decided by metacritic, and it is the only fair way because each system has games in the 89, or has games that have sold very well, but did not meet metacritic 90 and over.
(One objection was MKWii, please keep these objections to yourselves and let's keep this scientific and without bias)
(Meta analyses have been proven scientifically to remove bias)

Er...um...uh....

I really don't think it works like that.

Am I missing the joke?

AAA game status is determined by Gamerankings and Metacritic that are both owned by the same company. I believe that company is Microsoft who own a lot of websites on the internet.

Nope. Both sites are Cnet sites, and CBS owns Cnet.

I really don't understand the hypothetical link between critical acclaim and "hardcoreness" though. Difficult games like Ikaruga or Fire Emblem tend to get docked points, while franchises like Halo and GTA are acclaimed for their accessibility (read: casual appeal).

Clearly Wii software, and to a lesser extent DS software have a lower ratio of ‘AAA’ games than other platforms.

But what does this indicate?

Importantly, it highlights the extent to which the snobcore gaming press are completely out of touch with the mainstream gamer.

Wii Fit – 80, Mario Kart Wii – 82, Nintendogs – 83, Brain Training – 77, Wii Sports – 76

Apart from sharing releatively mediocre metacritic scores, what the above games have in common is that they will be the best selling games of the current generation when all is said and done (Alongside more traditional titles like NSMB and Pokemon D&P). None of them are ‘AAA’ according to a hardcore criteria.

Metacritic scores are useful when evaluating traditional platforms, but because the hardcore press don’t really ‘get’ the 'expanded' titles common on the the DS and Wii, these platforms will be naturally disadvantaged by such comparisons.

xponent I wrote that part about mkwii because of you. There are plenty of great games that are not on the 90+ rating, and the fact that you call wii fit mainstream gaming just hurts your own argument.
A game that sells a lot does not mean it is a AAA game. AAA means that the game exceeds certain gameplay expectations. Several pokemon are AAA and well deserved, the games you listed are not AAA.
If you really think wii sports is AAA you need to stop judging others.

I just wrote the hardcore part to have a better title, and in part to show what kinds of games console owners tend to buy AAA. (It's why I put the :P in the title, cuz it's silly)

everything is explained in the OP.

EDIT: I'm sorry, you have every right to call wii fit mainstream gaming. But calling it AAA gaming is delusional.

The difference here is that what you define as quality is according to a criteria outlined by a small elite, whether they be gaming reviewers, film reviwers etc.

What I am saying however, is that quality, being an inherently subjective measure, is in the eye of the beholder. If the majority disagree with an elite minority in a subjective evaluation, that does not make them wrong.

If you want to define quality according to metacritic, then fine, but it will clearly disadvantage Wii and DS, because some of the gaming elite won’t even accept casual titles as games at all.

But to define quality according to sales is equally valid, and more representative. You can’t deny that it is more representative, and its all subjective after all.

Little Big Planet is a casual game that got rave reviews on Meta Critic and elsewhere.

I'm not saying you're totally wrong,  but quality of a game should not be based off of sales.  Quality of a game is/should be based on many areas of criteria.   For example,  Metal Gear Solid 4 has undeniable quality (Graphics, Sound, Gameplay, Online mode, etc).  Wii sports is a cheap game that is packaged with the Wii that shows off the basic controls of a game, sure people own it but your forced to own it.
