i guess i can only speak for myself and my HDTV owning commrads. but if you want an HD movie player, i suggest going BR i makes more sense and offers more than the competition.

more support = more movies and media = more choices on the shelf = a happier consumer


Well you don't speak for all HD-TV owners either. I have a 42 inch plasma, but I still use DVDs. I won't be switching to any new format till I'm sure one has won, and that it won't be replaced in 2 years (and with stuff like HVD and downloadable movies constantly gaining popularity, I can see that happening). Till then, I have satelite with quite a few movie channels and TiVo. I continue to enjoy playing my very non-HD systems on my plasma as well (Wii and PS2). I'll be getting a PS3 and 360 eventually, but for now I'm doing just fine. :)


 I should saw I have an HD TV as well and I don't plan to switch to Blu-ray or HD-DVD anytime soon.  Even if I had a PS3 I wouldn't bother yet because I just don't want the chance of having media for a dead format lieing around.

well sir's, i said IF (underline IF) you want an HD movie player...
i never said you had to. stop the shinanigans and just admit your not ready for HD, thats not a ,major issue to me.
if your happy with a 42" plasma projecting the 480i, 480p quality picture to your eyes, then god bless.
As for me i prefer to enjoy the clairity of my movie in 1080i, 1080p quality. i jus wanted to have a better picture when i watch films.

however, i garuntee that if you were to give BR a chance you'll be more than happy with that 42" HD plasma. (dont waste the investment of that plasma go to waste with SD transmissions and DVDs)

Or...save your money, and just enjoy the movie on DVD...it's not that bad. You can use the money you saved to buy a popcorn machine for when you watch your DVDs!
(that's what my friend just did...not that he was ever thinking about buying an HD player)

now thats silly, comparing a persons love of movies to that of an equal affection for popcorn is hardly relevant.  i enjoy a good beer with my flick but i dont need to buy a home brewry system to further enjoy the money i could potentially save by not buying BR.

eversince i got an HDTV and started watching HD programming, i was waiting for the release of a HD home video system. because after i started watching channels in HD, my DVDs looked less apealing than just waiting to record them from HBO or SHOWTIME.  with BR i enjoy the latest flicks in HD for a reasonable price. 29.99 on initial release whereas the DVD is 22.99 on initial release.  8 bucks, to me, is a reasonable price to pay for the enjoyment of a new movie in HD.  some may like the idea of saving that extra money, i just want the HD clairity i recieve from my channels to be present in the movies i buy as well.

Oh well...DVD initial releases are typically 13.99 around here.

They typically raise the price close to 19.99 after a few days, but it's always cheap the first few days.

Low(er) cost BD player coming this fall. Btw, the blu ray association wrote that it is probable that this company will price the player at $400, which will further lower the price differential between BD and HDVD players. This new price might even compel the Sony to offer their newest BD player at this price and get Samsung to lower their's as well. The price for these things just gets better and better. We'll be looking at $200 BD players in a year or two. So, the era of the blu ray is here, folks.

I think the jump to Blu-Ray is almost as big as the one from VHS to DVD picture quality wise. I really notice know how bad of picture quality many things on TV and even some regular DVD's have after watching several movies in high definition. Early adopters are still the only ones in the market, but that is changing, and will change this Christmas. Might even boost PS3 sales some depending on how it is priced compared to standalone players.

I don't watch 480i and 480p quality movies.  My DVD player upscales to 1080p quite nicely.  Obviously it doesn't look as good as Blu Ray, but I'm paying 15 bucks less per movie and 500 bucks less for the player.  I also pay for HD movie channels on Satelite, and with TiVo save movies whenever I want.  So I watch quite a few high quality HD movies, I just have no desire to pay that much more to BUY them.  Not right now anyway.
