Forums - Sony - PS5 Jailbreak lets you play PS2 games from the disc. (Kinda)

From my understanding, its not running the game from the disc, but creates a digital copy of it first.
But the point is that you have access to play the game from your PS2 disc.

So they were just intentionally keeping this feature locked away?
Pretty weird that they allow PS4 games to be played, but not PS1 and PS2 games.

Ps3 also if I had to believe my social media.

Technologia!

Yeah I saw this too.

If PS1/2/3 playability was possible all along then it is very strange they didn't make it officially available.

Worse there are videos of people playing PS3 games via emulation on the PS5.
Showing that it is possible, for the PS5 to do so.... it has enough CPU resources to pull it off.

Which begs the question? wtf Sony? let people play PS3 games on their PS5 ffs.

Do PS2 discs even have encryption on them? I have to assume that is one of the core reasons outside of actual licensing issues in light of the fact that his is running ISO and not from the disc itself.

Before the PS5 launched, I said I would consider buying one if it was backwards compatible with every previous PS system and if it allowed us to use all of our discs from those systems. That being the ultimate PlayStation machine would make it incredibly valuable.

People called me crazy and said that I had unreal expectations: that the disc drive would not allow it, that the hardware wouldn't be powerful enough to play PS3 games...

Well, here we are. It could be done all along. It only took a few months, a bunch of dedicated fans and a declaration of ending physical media in order to pull it off.

I don't know the details on how disc protection works, but PS2 discs can be burned and copied with easy by using common programs (speaking from experience). I don't think they have a lot of protection xD

Honestly if the PS5 is the last system that comes with a disc drive.... it is such a waste of opportunity/potential that they didn't go for such a easy win.

The proof is there.

It is powerful enough for emulate and run PS3 games.
(not to mention ps1,ps2 games)

Why not just allow it? how much work could that really be? Give a few devs a half year or so, and see if they cannot add such functionality.
Would be a good PR move too.

Sony is allergic to good PR.
