Forums - PC Discussion - Rtx 4090 and 1000 watt psu?

Any thoughts on trying a 4090 with a 1000 watt power supply?  Also have a i7 13700k, 32 gb ram and some M2 storage.  Newegg calculator says 800 to 900 watts.  Seems close.  Safer to go with 4080 super or is 1000 watts enough?

Side note PC gaming and upgrading is addictive.

1000w psu would most likely be the minimum needed. A 1200w psu might be on the safe side with a 4090.

3 pin = safe with 850w. (Standard RTX 4090 450W default power)
4 pin = safe with 1000w. (Mid range upwards have a 600W max power limit) (Includes the FE model)

Each pin is 150w

PCI Express is 75w

You can just use 3 pci cables if you wish on any model.

Don't use Newegg. https://outervision.com/power-supply-calculator

1000 watts is plenty for a 4090 as long as you are getting the psu from a reputable brand. I have 1000 watt psu and I use my 4090 Strix. I was able to overclock it to it's maximum and run at 600 watts during benchmarks without any issues.

PC Specs: CPU: 7800X3D || GPU: Strix 4090 || RAM: 32GB DDR5 6000 || Main SSD: WD 2TB SN850

Thanks to all. I'll grab the 4090. My psu is brand new and is corsair.
According to Matt's link my system load is 750 watts and recommended psu is 830 watts. Seems 1000 will be good. Thanks to all.

I have no problems with my 800 watt power supply, but my 5800X3D CPU ain't as power hungry as the intel CPUs.

Notice any change in your electric bill with these kind of GPU's compared to a more modest one?

Not really...

  • a lot of my gaming time has shifted to my Steam Decks
  • i often play games my 3070 could handle fine in 1440p... the 4090 is much more efficient, so it doesn't need much more watts in 4K than the 3070 in 1440p
  • since I have my new 4K-"monitor" I play more at my desk, less on the couch... power demand is half in desktop mode, both in SDR and in HDR:

4090 installed, all seems well. Tight fit, but temps are staying low. It is definitely a powerhouse. Humble is having some good sales as well. My lucky weekend.
