Forums - Gaming Discussion - Rocket League reaches 10.5m sold and 29m Unique Players - Years of Support planned

Sitting down with Kinda Funny Games recently, Psyonix Vice President Jeremy Dunham revealed that Rocket League has now sold 10.5 million copies since launch across PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC. The total player count, including those who downloaded Rocket League through PlayStation Plus and split-screen players, is now around 29 million.

Dunham added that Rocket League has broken records month-after-month in December 2016, January 2017, and February 2017. “In December, we cracked our record for games played and active players. And we did it again in February last month, after doing it in January… and we beat the number by like 600,000 players.”

About 25% of the 29 million players (over 7 million) played Rocket League in February, and December saw almost 100 million games played.

Elsewhere in the interview, Dunham revealed that they don’t have any cut-off date for Rocket League support. He then explained why you shouldn’t expect a Rocket League 2 anytime soon:

Why would we want to take this huge community that we’ve already built, that’s still growing, and just say, ‘What you’re playing now is going to be irrelevant in 12 months, but we want you to stop what you’re doing, give us money all over again, and move over to this other game.’ That’s not the right way to do things. I think that that era of games has passed when you have a game like Rocket League.

So our goal was just to keep making Rocket League better and better so that we don’t lose any of the people that want to play… If they’re playing our game, we’re not going to penalize them… and make them buy our game again just because we want to add a couple new features. We want to let them know we’re in it for the long haul, if they’re in it for the long haul.

Dunham added that Pysonix is thinking of features “that are one, two years out in some cases. Not because we want people to wait for it, but because our backlog of really cool things is so deep it’s going to take us that long to get everything in the game up to this point. And that’s assuming we don’t have any other new ideas, which we will, because we come up with them all the time.”

Rocket league was the surprise Smash hit of 2015. The game is a beast. It will sell many more millions too.

Giving it away free on ps plus was the best thing ever. It made the game go viral.

I'm actually quite sure that it would've reached that amount of popularity without the free month. It just kickstarted it a bit faster.

All it needs now is an evergrowing esports scene with much higher price pools to gain even more popularity. $300,000 prize pool for RLCS 3 is nice and all but to get some attention they should bump it up to 7 figures.

It definitely wouldn't have.  The game looked shit by just watching videos.  But when you tried it out it was so fun. Everybody I know who bought it after the free month did so because people were telling them how amazing it was.  People who would never have bought it otherwise.

Yes, that is true for the first few months of the game. But RL is still making sales charts today almost 2 years after launch and that's certainly not thanks to a few free weeks. Also considering that the core fan base is on PC.

It definitely is because of that.  Its called a knock on effect. The game went viral thanks to it and the result is still being seen today.

Many people who got it free on ps4 even double dipped on pc.

And the core fanbase is split between pc/ps4. Massive active hardcore player base on the ps4. Not just pc.

I wouldn't call it massive or hardcore. I barely see anyone from PS4 at my rank.

RL was hyped well before it was even known to be free. The first month just made it a bit easier. RL is popular not because it's popular but because of its addicting core gameplay. Word of mouth would've spread either way. That's why it is still selling well today. if it was just the hype from the few people who got it for free it would've dropped off long ago.

Word of mouth would never have spread to the level it did.  It's basically the same game they released last gen with a new name. Didn't work then and wouldn't have worked now.

I barely see any pc players either.  Doesn't mean there isn't any. Ever think the ps4 players at the top have set it so they don't play pc players? I'm not sure the reason why I see a ton more ps4 players though,  probably just the matchmaking.

Well it's easy when you look at public rankings and see barely any non PC players.

The game started on PC with its alpha and gained a lot of word of mouth long before release. The comparison to the prequel is just bad. Back then they had zero marketing and people only stumbled accidentally over it. This time around they put massive amounts of money into marketing, also with the help of Sony of course. Even without the free  month they've put a lot of effort into marketing and got a lot of positive press.

Just because you just heard of it because it was free doesn't mean everyone else did. It maybe wouldn't have been as big on PS4 as it is now but that's just a small portion of the current active playerbase.

I didn't say everyone did.  I said a massive number of people did which is true.  Ps plus allowed it to become an absolute behemoth.

I'm a hardcore player yet my rank is only rising star.  Pc players are at an advantage so of course the very top has more of them.

Look at number of active players playing at any one time.  It's obvious both ps4 and pc have massive numbers of hardcore players playing everyday.
