I'm actually quite sure that it would've reached that amount of popularity without the free month. It just kickstarted it a bit faster.
All it needs now is an evergrowing esports scene with much higher price pools to gain even more popularity. $300,000 prize pool for RLCS 3 is nice and all but to get some attention they should bump it up to 7 figures.
If you demand respect or gratitude for your volunteer work, you're doing volunteering wrong.
