Forums - General Discussion - Are Otherkins making a mockery out of gender identity? #minddump

Tagged games:

For people that don't know what Otherkins are, these are people that indentify as animals or even mythical/fantasy creatures such as Dragons, Demons, Aliens, etc. At first glance I thought maybe it was some harmless roleplaying, which is fine and all but these people literally believe they're a Dragon or whatever. How can you believe you're something that doesn't even exist? I personally believe this is making a mockery out of the transgender movement which has been making a lot of progress in recent years. Once people hear this identity issue they might just shut down completely and think all of them are a joke.

I think we as humans try to make ourselves seem unique or more special than we really are, this seems to be the latest trend of that. If this were a real issue where are the people that indentify as things that are undesired? Where are the Cockroachkin, Ratkin, BacteriaKin? Coincidence? This is lunacy, I'll tell you what. Is this Roleplaying gone wrong? Do you think this is making a mockery of the trangender movement?

It's just special snowflake syndrome, from the same drama queens who change their sexuality every few weeks or fake anxiety or depression just for attention.

Oh gawd, the stupidity literally hurts. Stop it already!

Official member of VGC's Nintendo family, approved by the one and only RolStoppable. I feel honored.

Ah otherkin. Reminds me of the old days on the Something Awful forums where there was a new group of oddballs defending their existence everyday. Good times.

Oh boy do I find these people a little bit on the Zany side, especially those that identify as "gender-fluid".

Step right up come on in, feel the buzz in your veins, I'm like an chemical electrical right into your brain and I'm the one who killed the Radio, soon you'll all see

Or fucking don't eat gluten and feel the need to tell everyone. Get over yourself. You bring up a good point though. I'm sick of people vying for this attention by making shit up.

I bet the Wii U would sell more than 15M LTD by the end of 2015. He bet it would sell less. I lost.

What if I put a fursuit on me? Couldn't I pass for a dragon?

it appears Wright already did my job so um, I believe Otherkins are people too

This is hilarious. Stop encouraging these people, clearly something is wrong upstairs.

People do wierd shit to find attention and self validation, especially teenagers.

And yes, inventing random conditions or misidentifying with various exsisting ones, makes it harder for the people that actually suffer from depression, identity disorders, mental illnesses etc. or have one of the rarer sexual orientations.
Since these 'fakers' are seeking attention they tend to get it though and that helps painting a false picture about what people with these conditions really go though day to day, in the public concience.

The sad thing is, if you go to these lenghs to seek attention, you likely do have issues. Maybe not severe ones, but nevertheless ones that could be helped. But they're preventing themselves from getting help and healthy amounts and kinds of attentention by creating these intricate personas.

It reminds me of people who go through extreme amounts of effort to keep up this shiny fake fassade and be 'popular', but they're still not happy because they're hiding who they really are. This in turn makes them spend more effort on their personas. All the while avoiding to deal with whatever their real issue is.
I feel like these otherkins people are sort of on the other extreme end of the spectrum, but what they're doing is similar.

All in all, since no one seems to take them all that seriously I don't think they're doing massive amounts of damage.
