Forums - PC Discussion - I have a problem with the SW Dark Forces pack from Steam.

Tagged games:

So during the christmas holydays I bought a pack containing all of the games from the Star Wars Dark Forces Saga. DF1, DF2, Jedi Outcast, Mysteries of the sith and Jedi Academy. All are relatively old games, so I expected some problems from the beginning. Dark Forces 1, however, was very well optimized, it used that DOS-box emulator and run without problems. However, when I tried to play the rest, none of them work. Dark Forces 2 freezes my computer, and Jedy outcast and Jedi academy screw with my resolution. And I can't return the games because the first one worked well and I played it for two weeks, so the refund time is gone.

Does anyone else have this problems? How can I solve this?

You know it deserves the GOTY.

Maybe when some xbox one gamers are around/awake, they might know since pc and xbox one are apparantly one platform now.

In all seriousness, search through one of the major search engines and you'll probably find something. Does steam have forums that you can look out and ask about that?

Okay, I've managed to launch the DF2, but it still crashes when I try to play it. I think I'm just going to torrent that one and play it that way. :P

Okay, it seems that works now somehow. I went to the exe and put it to work on Windows 8 compatibility and now it runs well, and full screen too, thanks Basil :). Also I managed to change the inverted controlls, but I have no idea how did that happened.

I just tried the Steam versions on my system (Windows 10, 64bit)

Dark Forces runs okay, but only in locked 24 fps. The fix was easy: just changing the "cycles" in "dosbox.conf" from 20000 to 60000, now it runs smooth with 60 fps.

Dark Forces 2: Jedi Knight and its add-on Mysteries of the Sith were always problematic on newer systems... like many games of the dark "Windows incompatibilty era" (1995 - 2000, especially 1997 - 1999). Can't get it to run properly. :(

Jedi Outcast and Jedi Academy both run great, either in 1600x1200 on my 1920x1200 monitor (IPS, 60 Hz) and in 1280x1024 on my 1920x1080 monitor (TN, 120 Hz).

Have you tried changing the name of the exe or change the compatability? That is what I suggested to darwin - not sure if he did anything else but he got it to work.

As for me the only issue I had with the game was the inverted colors but that was fixed easily with a few files to the exe's folder.

Now it works. The only changes I made was setting Win98/ME-compatibility to the JK.exe (Jedi Knight) and the JKM.exe (Mysteries of the Sith), then chosing 1280x1024 in the menu. Hardware acceleration has to be off, but with 120 - 150 fps, it is fast enough. ;)
