Forums - Nintendo - What will be Nintendo's image template for Wii U moving forwards?

Tagged games:

In the early days of the Wii U, Nintendo seemed to have decided on a 720p + edge smoothing template for its Wii U games, as seen in New Super Mario Bro U and 3D World.

This pattern was disrupted last year, however, with Smash Bros running at 1080p, and Mario Kart at 720p without AA. Then, mix things up further, they then returned to 720p + edge smoothing for Captain Toad.

Question now is, what about Splatoon? Yoshi's Woolly World? Xenoblade Chronicles X? Zelda?

What do you predict for those?

Nintendo usually prioritizes gameplay over graphics pretty consistently. It seems like they will use whatever template will get them the desired performance levels, whether that's 30 or 60 frames per second.they don't really seem to have any one defined template.

There is no template. It's chaos.

Whatever looks good :)

Depends on the game! Like, you can't expect Zelda to run the same way Splatoon will. Like, Zelda might be 720p 30fps but Splatoon might be 1080p/720p+AA 60fps

i think it depends on the game.

1. the 3d world engine is going to continue to be used for spin-off titles like the brilliant captain toad (it's a terrific engine, makes knack look like sh!t--looks a lot like splatoon will be running on it, actually, minus aa to adjust for the multiplayer chaos and reduce lag).

2. the mario kart 8 engine will be used for an f-zero sometime down the line. just look at dat secksy mute city track, my gawd.

3. smash bros. is unique i think, they'd only done 1080p for wind waker hd before it. i think it's safe to assume remakes will default to this, it just makes sense and creates the most dramatic contrast with the 480p originals on wii/gamecube. i see a super mario sunshine hd in 2015 running 1080p. and mario maker? (not that it would matter..)

etc.: zelda and xenoblade chronicles x are one-offs, i think (both will probably be 720p native). i could see yoshi running 1080p, tho.

I think Yoshi Woolly will be 1080p 60fps +AA, and probably Splatoon too (but without +AA)
Xenoblade and Zelda 720p 60fps

splatoon's already confirmed 720p. nintendo's released high-res images to the press were all 720p, and aa is apparently also missing. as a previous poster said, i think this is just a case of prioritizing gameplay over visuals.

Oh, I´m wrong with Splatoon then, but i don´t mind, I rather 720p with 60fps for action games than 1080p 30fps, it´s just feel better when you play it at 60.

Splatoon's also confirmed 60fps as of the latest trailer, so 720p makes sense, in order to maximise the chaos while maintaining a locked performance.

Nintendo seem very stingy with AA for some reason, which is weird, as third party games have shown the system's fully capable of handling a variety of AA methods.
