About a year and a half ago I made the decision to become more fit, and since then I've lost about 30 pounds (~13 kilos). In addition to the exercise, healthy eating is also necessary. My mom is a dietitian so I know a bit about a healthy diet, but I also did some of my own research.
I've had a stable weight for a while, maybe almost a year. I combined cardio, strength training, and a healthy diet.
During the beginning when I wanted to lose weight I lowered my daily caloric intake by maybe 300-400 calories. I think that really helped my shed the weight. What you eat/drink plays a larger role than what some people think.
If you haven't done so, give yourself some good nutrition background info. You're going to have to look at food labels. Know what you're butting into your body. Try to limit the amount of fat you are eating, especially the saturated and trans fats. This means staying away from fried foods. Fruits, nuts, vegetables, lean meats, and whole grains are your new best friends. I also gave up desserts and junk food altogether, except for rare occasions. It's good that you ditched soft drinks; those are just sugar: empty calories with no real nutritious value. But also stay away from other sugar-sweetened beverages (SSBs), because they have the same amount of sugar as soft drinks. These are your sweet teas, gatorades, fruit punch, lemonade, etc. It may sound like a big sacrifice, but I thought it was worth it. I'm much more satisfied with and proud of my body than ever before.
Been away for a bit, but sneaking back in.
