Starfox needs to come back before anything else. I’m not kidding. Do you people realize that we haven’t gotten a universally accepted Starfox game since the days of Ocarina of Time/Majoras Mask, Banjoo Kazooie, and Goldeneye? I just want to say I LOVED the original Starfox, and I loved 64 EVEN more, and I actually enjoyed Adventures (but it wasn’t the same type of game and most people didn’t like it like I did), but after that it went downhill. That is a LOOOONG time. Since then, we’ve gotten a ridiculous amount of sequels to Zelda, Mario, Metroid that are (in many cases) some of the best reviewed games ever. Rogue Squadron games essentially replaced the epic feel of starfox on the gamecube in my opinion. But why does that mean we can’t have a starfox like the glory days of the past? Here are my main reasons for why Nintendo HAS to be working on a Starfox for the Wii U RIGHT NOW:
1. Starfox 64 is one of the most revered and referenced games of all time. Nintendo is well aware of this. They spent very little time and resources polishing the game and rereleased a game that was (prior to the release of the Wii U) 3 generations prior to the 3ds and it still managed to sell close to a million units (I think Vgchartz are off). Keep in mind, this game was released when the 3ds was in a state that is similar to that of the Wii U right now. If this game release now, it would easily, in my opinion, sell millions. Anyway, Nintendo knows how popular 64 was (and still is), so don’t you think they would want to make another game that makes people talk for the NEXT 15 years?
2. Spaceship fighting console games aren’t exactly common. When Starfox went missing, it seems like the other epic ones did too. Rogue Squadron games were certainly amazing during the Gamecube era, and then Battlefront (but that was only partially focused on spacefights). What the heck happened to the console spaceship fighting genre? There is a HUGE hole in my opinion and if Nintendo made an EPIC Starfox, open solar system exploration type spaceship game I think a TON of people would get a Wii U for Starfox as their MAIN reason.
3. Nintendo made it clear that the Wii U was targeting the so called “hardcore” crowd and not just the casuals. They did target the casuals, with some mild success as of late (Wii Party U looks to be a million seller soon globally), however not anything near like the Wii was. If they can’t succeed with the casuals, then that leaves only the SUPER casuals (the free/.$99 gamers) or the “hardcore.” Nintendo has made it clear they don’t have any interest in the super casual genre (as that would lessen their products in their opinion), so that leaves only the hardcore left. The Gamecube was my favorite console of all time, but the N64 certainly felt like the most epic “hardcore” gamer experience of any console I’ve ever played. Nintendo needs to either develop, or have someone else develop, games like the glorious N64 games of the past for the Wii U and Starfox U is a must.
4. Many gamers (including me) are obsessed with good stories being in games. I personally find Andross to be one of the best villains Nintendo has ever created, and I really would love if they would do a backstory on him. Heck why not have the Wii U Starfox game be a PREQUEL to the first one? Regardless, if I saw a massive explosion on a planet with Andross (in full 1080p) laughing in the background at E3 I would… I would… do a barrel roll… They have an enormous opportunity with an amazing setting and villains for an epic Starfox game.
5. In order to keep their main games popular (such as Mario and Zelda), they need to occasionally pump out epic games that have to do with their other ip’s that aren’t as big (currently). Starfox has been missing for a long time and we’ve gotten a lot of other games in the more popular series in that time period. By releasing games like Pikmin 3, Donkey Kong Country Returns: Tropical Freeze, the eventual Metroid U game, and hopefully Starfox U, it will allow gamers to seriously get excited about Zelda U or the next Mario Wii U game because people will stop associating Nintendo consoles as simply Mario/Zelda machines and they will start valuing the release of those games even more in the future because they won’t feel like rehashes (which they aren’t, but many feel they are).
6. It’s clear that Xbone and Rehashstation 4 are once again FPSboxes that focus more on games where you mindlessly blow people’s heads off in games like Halo, Titanfall, Destiny, all the thousands of variations of Call of Duty that release every 6 months, Bugfield, and everything else. Every now and then a game like Knack or Rayman comes out, only to fade away after decent initial sales. It’s also clear that Nintendo has given up on these types of games, because it’s audience does not care about shooters or games involving assassinations. They instead focus on platformers and 2d sidescrollers and they have success with it (just like PS4 and Xbox one has success with their area), but they could absolutely have total control over more than those two genres. They need to branch out more, and Starfox U could allow them to take control of the spaceship fighting genre, which could lead to them branching out more and more taking control of more and more genres while Sony and Microsoft fight each other for control of the shooter games.
7. I don’t have a 7th reason, I just hate the number 6 so I had to have 7. That being said, I love you all.
