Forums - Gaming Discussion - Final Fantasy XIV Tops 1.5 Million Registered Accounts

Tagged games:

The relaunched version of the second Final Fantasy MMORPG, Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn, has already surpassed the 1.5-million-accounts-registered mark, according to Famitsu.

That's a solid figure, though it provides no update on how many of those users areactively playing the game. With the relaunch only having gone live at the end of August, it may be at least several more months before we have a clear sense of whether the game will see any continued success, though early indications -- like digital sales being haltedfor several weeks -- are positive. Whatever the case may be, the launch of thePlayStation 4 version -- which, upon release, PS3 players will be able to upgrade to for free -- should be a boon for Square Enix.

There is plenty that remains in store for the game's future, including the 2.1 update that will introduce player housing, among other things. Players can currently take part in the game's Halloween event, All Saints Wake, which is ongoing through the end of the month.

How many users do they need to sustain a game like this?

Final Fantasy XI had 600,000 active subscribers at it's peak (I think its worded confusingly, 1.5 registered isn't active subscribers, and includes people not resubbing) and it was SE biggest cash cow ever. Dragon Quest X I believe had 300,000 peak or so. I could be wrong.

Obviously what matters with MMO's is how it does longterm, especially since it didn't require you give them your credit card at initial launch. I played it some first month, but I'ma wait until new features like housing before resubbing.

FFXI did well in that regard. FFXIV was undoutedly more expesnive as well as they had to essentially develop it twice. FXIV success remains to be seen. But, most indicators seem positive, and imo unexpected.

FF14 is pretty popular and still has a lot of people playing. My server is pretty stacked.

Wow, quite impressed. Honestly didnt expect it to have that many people.

Yeh I was surprised aswell. I still haven't got it yet, waiting for the PS4 version.

1.5 million accounts is not the same as paying subscribers. A lot of these are from alpha, and beta testers.

Its currently on the top 10 most downloaded game in September on the PSN store.
