Forums - Microsoft Discussion - Microsoft says IllumiRoom tech too expensive for Xbox One

Yes that was clear the moment they showed the tech in that video. Maybe 10 years from now. The same thing with that Oculus Rift thingy.

I doubt anyone really expected to see this being released any time soon. It's obviously an expensive piece of kit and likely wouldn't sell enough to justify it's creation.

Hopefully we will see it at affordable prices one day, because it's some really cool stuff.

I think the Oculus Rift is aiming for the $300 price mark.

But isn't that a budget version of it? I swear something about that like 2 months ago!

10 years from now we will have full 5 senses emulated VR.

Well, the Dev kit is being sold at $300 right now which is like the proto-consumer version. It is heavier and has a lower resolution than they want the final version to have. But they are aiming for $300 for the final consumer version too. Of course this is just an aim, really hoping they manage it though :P

Thousands of dollars? I guess they are using pretty powerful projectors to get those kind of effects on walls and furniture. I would have thought you could get away with a low res $300 to $500 projector, no need for sharp detail in your peripheral vision.

That would still be too much anyway for a peripheral that would only get limited support. Never mind the headaches in setting it up correctly, they have yet to show a working coffee table setup, so far the projector is always carefully mounted on a rack behind the couch.

Still think this is really cool. I am sure this can be done more cheaply in a few years. If this next gen lasts more than 5 years, it might make it to them. I would guess that Kinect 3.0 and some type of projection system that costs $300-$500 would make this a much better system.
