Analysis
You wouldn't think the month before E3 would be very eventful. Strangely enough, you'd be wrong. Plenty of stuff did and did not happen this month worth mentioning.
First of all, let's adress the elephant in the room. No Xbox One games charted this month. This can be attributed to the lateness of Microsoft's presentation this month and the relatively few titles shown. Only three games have been announced as One exclusives. For comparison's sake, the PS4 has four major first party exclusives already announced. So I wouldn't declare gllom and doom for the Xbone as it is becoming named yet. Wait until next month's results first.
The rising star of the month was Nintendo. The 3DS gained 95 points month over month, and the Wii U gained 39. Many of those 3DS points can be attributed to Zelda. With A Link to the Past 2 and Wind Waker both unveiled and a new Wii U Zelda confirmed, the series earned a combined total of 63 points. Link to the Past 2 is second only to Pokemon X/Y on the 3DS, and is #5 overall for individual skus.
Furthermore, the 3DS is seemingly a haven for JRPG's. Not only do you have Pokemon, but also Shin megami Tensei, Bravely Default, Mario & Luigi, and Monster Hunter coming up. After Animal Crossing comes out in a couple of weeks, Link to the Past 2 may very well be the only notable non-RPG coming up for the 3DS, excepting the inevitable E3 announcements.
The Wii U is also doing quite well, especially X and Pikmin 3. True, most of its power comes from Nintendo, but not all is bad on that front. Shin Megami X Fire Emblem, Super Smash Bros 4, The Wonderful 101, and Bayonetta 2 all are made in cooperation with other companies, and even a few true third party games like Rayman charted.
The big winner continues to be the PS3, but that is likely to soon change. The Last of Us, which earned over 10% of all points this month, is coming out in a few weeks. As more 8th gen games are announced at E3, it is possible that the PS3 will decline from this admittedly high point. Still, with games like Beyond: Two Souls, GTA5, Tales of Xilia, Final Fantasy X HD, and Dark Souls 2 all probably coming out this year, the PS3 will likely remain strong at least until November.
The PC gained a few points month over month, but its lack of a major upcoming exclusive hurt it. Same with the 360. The Vita has lost nearly 100 points this past quarter, as games such as Soul Sacrifice have come out and nothing has taken their places.
The lead third party continues to be Square Enix, but this is something of a lame accomplishment. Square Enix has 60 points from HD remakes and late ports, with the remaining lead title being the elusive Versus XIII. Expect them to either pull themselves together or decline after E3.
