Forums - Gaming Discussion - Will mobile gaming kill handhelds -- but not for the reason everyone thinks?

Tagged games:

Capcom announced it will be placing Ace Attorney on iOS (see link at the end of the story). Square Enix teazed The World Ends with You -- and people hoped for a sequel until it was announced it was an iOS port (again see link at the end of the story).

Nothing wrong with ports. Nothing wrong with using IP to make money.  The potential problem is the pricing.  Chances are, since the R&D has been done, these games will only be a few bucks -- not the $30 or so (USD) that they cost on the DS.

Everyone has been asking "Will people buy 3DS/PSV games for $30/$40/$50 when they can get games on their phone for nothing/next to nothing?"

Perhaps the real question is "Will people buy games on their 3DS/PSV games for $30/$40/$50 when they can get eseentially the SAME GAME later for next to nothing?"

This then creates a system where IPs are used up. And once they are all ported over at ridicullously low prices, there is nothing left to support the mobile market at the cheap rate. So people have to come up with new IPs which are usually not as suceessful as "Angry Birds."  Meanwhile, the long-time market of handhelds will have been eroded by software company decisions, further making it difficult to make money.

I like to jump around, and would lead a fairly serene and aimless existence if it weren't for my friends always getting into trouble. I love to help out, even when it puts me at risk. I seem to make friends with people who just can't stay out of trouble.

with or without the direct ports - IOs/Android price model has devalued mobile, console games already.

I think I first noted this when Ghost Trick was ported to iOS. Third parties are effectively devaluing their IPs by setting such a precedence. If it becomes common that third party games on dedicated handhelds get ported to iOS on a later date, then software sales on the handhelds will take a significant hit and third parties will face the dilemma that their games don't sell much on handhelds and can only be sold for cheap prices on iOS, meaning that new games don't justify current development costs anymore.

But since Nintendo games will continue to sell Nintendo handhelds, your thread title is overly dramatic.

Devaluing IPs by charging next to nothing on mobile devices -- was it not that warning/sentiment that got Iwata all but booed off the stage at GDC 11?

Also, I must bow to the wisdome of Rol.  According to VGC, only 14 ouf the top 50 selling DS titles were third-party, including just one of the top 15 (Cooking Mama at 15th). Talk about NIntedomination.

If Iphone and pads do ever take over. It will be because of 3rd parties period. They should be working to ensure that definite platforms remain. So yea..

Thing is, to get the same revenue from a 3$ App as they do from a 30$ cartridge they need to sell a ton more. I would like some profit chartz on this matter.

Another problem is: publishers are already aiming at mobiles for AAA projects and ports from next gen consoles, due to scalable (this word exists?) engines.

Just wait till the next generation of tablets and smartphones and you'll see for yourselves, the same CoD experience you've got on X360 today will be a reality on mobile by 2014.

Consoles are gone.
