Forums - Sony - Despite PS4 rumors, now is a 'great time' to own a PlayStation 3, according to Sony

He is right. If you did not own a PS3 this generation then now is a great time. The price is reasonable, many of the consoles best games can be had for $20 or less or purchased in bundles containing 3 games (Sometimes more) for $40. It also has plenty of life left in it, evident by new IPs such as Beyond, TLOU, PSASBR & Last Guardian on the way.

Quite a different tact than Nintendo. By this point last year (15 months or so from expected next console launch), the WiiU was announced and a semi-known quantity.

Instead, Sony (and Microsoft) have been very quiet about their future plans, even though both are thought to be releasing replacements in Fall/Holiday 2013.

Thus, sales can be maintained at a much higher level -- which is necessary for the bottom line.

I like to jump around, and would lead a fairly serene and aimless existence if it weren't for my friends always getting into trouble. I love to help out, even when it puts me at risk. I seem to make friends with people who just can't stay out of trouble.

What are they going for now? $250 with a $299 bundle? Not bad, but I wouldn't say "budget" until they hit $199. That's usually a pretty sweet spot for casual consumers.

Personally, I never buy consoles at launch. I wait for the library to build and for at least one price cut, sometimes two. Meanwhile, I enjoy all the titles the previous generation has to offer. For anyone just getting into gaming, the PS3 does have a LOT of great games to play with, and a lot of those games are pretty cheap brand new.

And of course they have plans for a price drop, they're just not going to divulge those plans before they officially announce them. No business does that, as it makes zero sense financially. It would be like shooting yourself in the foot. The key words here are "(that) we can talk about."

I agree with him, but when he says they are not thinking about price cuts, is he saying the truth? Because if he were, a redesign of a console without a price cut wouldn't be a big deal.

Well, he's not going to say "Now isn't the best time to own a PS3, I'd hold off if you were thinking of buying one!"

That said, I agree with him. I've had my PS3 since 2008 and loved it since then. But if you don't have one by now - the price is great, the hardware is solid (slim version is much better), the library of games is outstanding & fairly cheap for most of the good stuff, so on and so forth.

I'll be keeping my PS3 anyway, but if PS4 isn't backwards compatible then I guess that's another reason to own one.

they already confirmed in E3 new console and games are being made.

News to me, what did they speciifically say?

I agree the new slim if its true will not have much memory to it. So your better off buying a ps3 with some memory. There are so many great games , new and used. I think ps3 is a great value for what your paying. The onlines free, great games you really cant lose on ps3.

well it's not just about hardware. We have been hearing quite a bit about the software side of things. For example during gamescom we learned that MM has been spending a good chunk of money on R&D and that they are already working on a new game that is still in early early stage of development. GG, Sony Santa Monica (the guy behind gow3 is making an unknown shooter) etc. has been coming out in the past few months. There's also a lot of small rumors about the hardware as well. I see some over at gaf. I don't understand a single thing they are discussing tho lol
