Forums - Gaming Discussion - gamrRead: Books about Videogames!

Tagged games:

Hey all. So I just launched a new feature on gamrReview about books related to the videogame industry called gamrRead. You can find the first edition here: http://www.gamrreview.com/article/88979/gamrread-extra-lives-why-videogames-matter/

So I wanted to make a thread asking members to share any interesting books they've read about videogames. The first book I read was a book called Extra Lives, by Tom Bissell. In a future article I will tackle the book Mogworld, by Ben Yahtzee Croshaw.

Thoughts? Feedback?

The only one that comes to mind is Masters of Doom. That whole era of video game development seems so cool, but id has an especially interesting history. The whole rags to riches to "John Romero's gonna make you his bitch Facebook games" story is engaging stuff.

Will you be doing any books that are based on videogames? Such as Halo or Mario or any other games. Or are you strictly doing books about videogames?

Books based on videogames are fair game as well. Not sure which ones I will read as of yet.

For the Halo series I highly recommend The Fall of Reach and First Strike. There are a lot of books in the Halo universe but those two are still by far the best, especially for a newcomer to the universe.

If your pretty knowledgeable about the Halo universe I would also recommend Halo evolutions. Its a collection of short stories that take place throughout the Halo universe and is an absolutely brilliant read, especially if you come in with some prior knowledge on events.

The definitive evidence that video games turn people into mass murderers

If you enjoy Mass Effect. The first three books are pretty good at helping expand the fiction as well as telling their own interesting stories. Though none of them revolving around Sheperd.

I have enjoyed this considerably:

@OP, I'm not sure if it even counts, but Assassin's Creed: Renaissan is the only book I've read. It's a pretty interesting book.
