Man pays $200,000 to save fake girlfriend in online scam

A 48-year-old Illinois man has experienced an online scam that was particularly devastating, both financially and emotionally. A woman he believed to be his online girlfriend turned out to be a fake, and his money has disappeared with her.

The scam was recently revealed because he went to the police asking for help to rescue the woman, insisting that she had been kidnapped in London. The online "relationship" between the two began over two years ago, during which he wired about $200,000 to several different bank accounts in Nigeria, Malaysia, England, and the US. That's all according to a police report cited by the Naperville Sun, which explained the nonexistence of the woman:

An identification card the woman provided to the man was a sample driver’s license from Florida, the report said. According to the report, when the officer stated the female did not exist, the man "was in disbelief." The case is under investigation.

We knew that love, offline or online, was blind, but we never thought it could be pushed to this extent. He's not the brightest man alive, but given your experiences with love, do you feel sorry for him?

A fool and his money...

Face the future.. Gamecenter ID: nikkom_nl (oh no he didn't!!)

And that is why online dating should never be advised to anyone. The fact that people are telling someone else that they love them, jumping through hoops for them, even sending them money and gifts, depsite never meeting them before just completely baffles me.

I understand in some special circumstances online dating might be the answer, like if you have a disease/are paralyzed, or your getting older, but why is it so difficult for people to just go outside and find someone for themselves?

A lot of things happening in real life that don't make sense.

As you get older, you'll be less and less surprise by such things. Still amusing, though.

Learning some lessons can be very very expensive. And it can be utterly devastating too. I guess this guy will be resentful for the rest of his life. Better stay away from him!

Why do stupid people always have so much money? It's unfair!

I disagree, I met my boyfriend online and now we've been dating (in real life) for more than a year, online dating is a wonderful thing...if you have some grey matter, which obviously this guy doesn't.

I mean, if you can spend 200k for someone you've never seen in real life....

Note to self:

"Working as a fake internet girlfriend would be an excellent addition to "used" panties business."

Wow what a dunce.

Would this be an appropriate time to mention that I'm actually an incredibly attractive woman who needs to escape to *insert your country here*? The only problem is leaving my country. During the recent civil war I was arrested and imprisoned, and the bail is $100,000.

This is an opportunity for a valiant VGChartz member to be my prince and take me away from my country, for which I promise eternal love. To do this, all you need to do is transfer $10,000 at a time to some bank accounts based in east Africa where your money will pay for my bail.
