Isn't it the Sony Playview?

I don't think that's true.  The PSP has great hardware and can last a lot longer(3DS visuals offer only a marginal upgrade to PSP besides 3D and on the screen size viewable on the devices it's still pretty negligable).

Hideo Kojima disagrees...

The final game may actually look better than the demo, as well. "The high level models are about the same quality as the stuff we made on the PlayStation 3," Kojima said, "although it's tough to see this. If we'd had a bit more time, we could have made something better."

On screens this small the difference will be hard to see and thus negligable.  Most customers aren't graphic whores.

In 2 months Kojipro put together a rough 3DS tech demo that's more visually impressive than their 5th generation full blown MGS sequel on PSP.  "Marginal upgrade" seems like it doing a rather big disservice to 3DS imo.   All things equal, going from basically no shaders to a variety of shader effects (which are implemented with relative ease and take negligible performance hit overall) would alone be a rather significant upgrade.  And really, 3DS is likely doing well more than just that.  It's like going from Dreamcast to Xbox and saying "marginal upgrade".

Your out of context assumption (nowhere does Kojima attribute this to or even imply it's due to screen size) is even more off the mark given that Kojima in the very next sentence says "If we'd had a bit more time, we could have made something better".

it doesn't matter what sony does apparantly according to this site sony is doooooooomed....

now on to being serious, i think the next psp will be an andriod based peripheral, it may surprise you all, psp will hang around for longer then all of you want it's the only handheld that has managed to survive so long with  ninty at the helm of the handheld market.

Well, while I do think repurposing PSP spec (or an upgraded PSP-spec, Wii-style) for other devices makes sense (tablet, phone, etc), I don't really see the benefit to using Android.  Why would Sony try to use an open source, 3rd party OS (with it's own store even) for their PSP line?  Just doesn't make much sense structurally, competitively or logistically to me as surely Sony could craft a more appropriate and effective solution internally, and it seems like most pushing the idea are going for an "enemy of my enemy is my friend" strategy vis-a-vie Google vs Apple.  And that's... well, a bit naive to say the least.

If it were on a 3 to 4 inch screen i would say the same thing about xbox to dreamcast.  They can put tons more effects but on such a small screen it's not going to be that noticable unless you have an artstyle that is conducive to highlighting such effects. Realism isn't going to look that much more real on a tiny screen.

Why else would it be hard to see?  He sure doesn't give a reason would you like to?  When developers have more time they can always make something better lest it's fully optimized.

Kojima basically says it's hard to tell, due to the rushed nature of everything.  That's why (logically) with more time, they'd be able to make the jump clearer.

And I think you need to watch the Resident Evil Revelations trailer to see just how much shader effects can push lower end geometry... it's a shame RE PSP was likely canned, it's probably help illustrate how laughable "marginal upgrade" really is.

@jarrod
well maybe he should work on that.  I still don't think most people will be able to tell the difference.

I saw the RE:R trailer btw.

If android is on a lot of mobile devices and they are a part of it then they are on a lot of devices. If the PSP and PS3's performance in the market relative to competitors is any indication they might not be able to craft an effective solution internally. Most users around here certainly don't think they can come up with a solution to be on top again.

If Sony's titles are available on android it is a win win situation.  Sony gets a larger market to sell software to and Android gets games that are Iphone beaters quality wise.  While my evidence is only anecdotal I was just speaking last night with someone who purchased an Iphone over the N1. His reasoning...games on the iphone were superior.  They really could compliment each other's weaknesses well. Piggy backing Android gives Sony massive penetration of the mobile market and Sony provides good software content for android thus giving it even better market penetration.

Wasn't there an article around here stating that Playstation would become a part of Google Tv?
