Do you play on your PC much? It seems a shame to have such a high quality CPU in comparison to your GPU.

      x
Yes, I play a lot on PC.

The difference between my CPU and my GPU is because my previous motherboard failed and I couldn't get another one of the same socket to keep using my CPU, an i5-750, so I had to change both things.

But I'm planning to get a new GPU, either a R9 290 or a GTX970. But before choosing which one, I'll wait for prices to settle down a bit and for newer revisions of the 970 to come out that don't have problems.

The R9 290 dropped about £60 on amazon the Tri-x OC edition, not sure if it's done it on your country (unless you're UK)

But i'm currently debating between a 290 or a 970. Similar performance but 970 uses way less power but I have an AMD CPU and rumour has it that AMD CPU's work best with AMD GPU'S.

Prices for the 290 have also fallen here in Spain and some of them cost less than the 970, but the 970 is still a little bit faster and uses way less power. The problem is finding them on stock! www.vgchartz.com/includes/grin.gif" border="0">

In regards to mixing brands of CPUs and GPUs, it's true that some years ago there was a difference, but it was mainly for the Northbridge chip that provided the PCI lanes. Once that function was moved to the CPU that difference disappeared in favor common sense: a better (not more expensive) CPU will give you more performance.

Choose the card in regards of its pros and cons, not what processor you have.

I think i'll go with a £60 difference, over less power and a little less performance. Considering if I got a 970 I'd probably need to upgrade PSU anyway.

      ???
If a 290 uses more power than a 970, how would you need to change your PSU for a 970 but not for a 290?

In any case, both cards are very good so whichever you choose, you can't go "wrong".

I run my FX 6300 and HD7870 OC on a 480W PSU. I'd need about 550W for a 970 and to have either with breathing room for upgrading + extra fans and have lots of safe room left over would be about 750W PSU.

So I'm factoring the price of a PSU and GPU into my choice but you're right they're both great. If I had a G-Sync monitor or something then that would probably sway me to go to the 970. But I still may do it if I find most of the games I play are optimised for Nvidia hardware rather than AMD.

Where did you get that 550W number? Looking at Anandtech's bench:

A system with a 290 would use 380W and one with a 970 300W. Sure, AMD CPUs use more power, but if your PSU is from a good brand, you should be safe. But if you want to have that peace of mind, a 550 or 600W is all you really need.
