I'm not sure why everyone was expecting core games to be anounced at a conference that actually gets some mainstrem coverage. I just googled "e3" and the first news article was from the New York Times 5 hours ago. We should have expected that they would cater to their new audience since this is one of the few times that they have a good chance to grab their attention without spending money on TV ads.
There are other ways that Nintendo can annouce their core games to core gamers, and we pay close attention to the industry anyway. Hell, how often is it that we know about something before it even becomes official?
