The thing about Nintendo though is that no matter how arrogant they get, they always sit on a mountain of cash. Even in the lean times of 03'-04' they had like ~$10 billion just sitting in banks for a really rainy day.
Sony and Microsoft as companies have lots of money, but they generally expect the gaming sector to carry its own weight now. Given that Sony & Microsoft have lost so much money on the PS3, Xbox/early Xbox 360 years it may not be easy for them to come back against Nintendo vs. a company like Sega in the Genesis days which was equally gaming centric and desperate, or even Sony in the mid 90s which entered with no expectations and both Nintendo/Sega making mistakes.
That isn't to say Nintendo is perfect, but given the size vs. profitability of a company like Nintendo you have to figure its easier to realign corportate philosophy to come back when you sit on a mountain of cash.
All the same, coming in third in two generations may mean selling 100m consoles anyway (vs. number one selling ~300m+). I think this could be the last generation with two of the main machines under ~75 million.
