Horror elements in Metroid imo were really a thing mainly for Fusion and Dread, the other games I feel were always far more exploratory sci-fi action.

Super Metroid definitely starts with a pretty heavy horror vibe as well.  You start with the dark Ceres Space Colony with all the dead scientists.

Then there's Ridley's appearance on the colony, indicating he was responsible for all that bloodshed.
