People in Germany prefer conservative politics and it worked great for the longest time. The problem is that the Merkel CDU drifted a lot to the left but people stayed just as conservative as they used to be. So CDU lost more and more of its voters while other parties gained voters (AfD the most obviously). This resulted in CDU forming a coalition with a left party (SPD) to stay in power so naturally, they couldn't implement conservative policies.

The problem is, outside of the CDU there was no other party to vote for (and that has a chance to get into the parliaments) that stands for more right values.
Also the SPD of old was also far more right than they are today.
