Nah, it's not just you; GTA5 and Red Dead 2 were notable offenders here where it felt like your input was giving the character suggestions about where to go instead of actually moving them.

Now that we are shitting on Rockstar, I have another complaint about these two games specifically, but also games in general and open world games particularly. Too many checkpoints! I remember how people used to bitch about how when you failed a mission in GTA, you had to start all over again and drive to the beginning of the mission, or at least start the mission all over. They "fixed" it by throwing in a lot of checkpoints, but the consequence of that is that the missions all become generic. It completely takes away the gamer's creativity and flexibility in how to tackle a mission. Half of the fun was prepping yourself for the mission and making a strategy.
It is not only Rockstar though, too many games save your progress faster than you can take a breath. It is a good thing sometimes, certainly, some older games are too masochistic, and some games are better off being more forgiving. But I don't understand why gamers celebrate this development to such an extend. I always meet the argument that it is "artificial difficulty" when a game makes you lose your progress. I say, if failing has no consequences, succeeding isn't rewarding.
