What's the greatest 2D game ever made in your view, and why?

Super Mario Bros. saved the industry, I think this is not even a question.

If you're asking for my favorite, though, that would be Donkey Kong Country 3 due to how incredible it's exploration and secrets are. And all of that on a 16 bit system.
