IMO it was Nintendo’s sloppy rough transition into HD. They went into Wii U expecting to pump out software like they had on the Wii/GCN, but ended up releasing an HD upscaling of NSMB as the system’s killer launch title, and nothing in sight until Pikmin 3 & Mario 3D World almost a year after launch.
Don’t get me wrong, the system did see some great games. Nintendo just misjudged how demanding developing for an HD system in addition to a portable GCN (i.e. 3DS) would be. The fact that they unveiled the console an entire year-and-a-half before launch with no games ready to show says all that you need to know.
