It's close, but I'm going with the OG Final Fantasy 1. The biggest reason people don't like it is because they want it to be something that it was never capable of being. (The heavy narrative FF games started with 4.) Final Fantasy 1 is a game about resource management. Almost all FF games do this to some extent, but the first one did it the best IMO. Also, I find the NES version to be much more fun than the GBA version, so for some reason the version you play seems to matter.

I almost picked FF 11, but I think the best version of the game really only exists on private servers now (or possibly it just doesn't exist anymore).

The GBA version of FF1 replaced the spell charge system with MP in an effort to modernize it and make it accessible to players who were familiar with the mp system. The thing is, that old magic system was very interesting in that you could budget how you were going to use spells.

Example: like around the Earth Cave or Fire area → Level 1 and 2 spells could be used at any time on the journey without worry. Level 3 and 4 spells save for emergencies and the final boss. Or something approximating that.

Anyway, I was very happy the Pixel Remasters restored the game to its original mechanics.

As a note: I've probably written some stuff that can be perceived as negativity toward the game, but that's mainly to emphasize the growth of later games in the franchise. It doesn't even mean I dislike the game; it's one I've replayed many, many times as it has that element of putting together a party and adventuring to see how they do (or how I can do with them). I don't think there is another game franchise that gives that kind of experience, except maybe Wizardry games; and, it's fun.
