Video games were never a dying category. Nintendo kept investing in a platform that is pretty much their product, and is widely successful. That's not the case for physical media.
Sony wasn't in a dominant position in 2021? Even if so, Xbox is mostly digital too right now.
That's kind of the problem. Most people aren't buying digital, and Sony thinks physical is pretty inconsequential. And you'd just be proving them right. Physical isn't that big. It's down to about 10% of the market on PS5. A lot of those people are just going to switch to digital copies, that Sony gets way better margins on. Even if 50% of people stop buying physical, Sony doesn't care. That's what they're hoping for. If you want to prove Sony wrong, you need to do what they won't expect, which is buy *more* physical games. And yes, Sony is being remarkably arrogant. Apparently they don't even think they need to talk to consumers about this. |
-Games aren't dying, it's just that digital is seemingly becoming more popular than physical. Hence Wii more popular than PS3. So why no PS Wii then?
-9th gen launched late 2020, so no, SNY was not in the same overly dominant position they are now. XB has been trying this since 2013 and it was the first knife of a thousand and the brand has slowly been bleeding out since.
-Wrong. Most casuals won't go to that extent. They may buy a physical copy here or there, but they're not going to inconvenience themselves all the time, from their point of view. It's basically up to the semi hardcore casuals and the hardcore audience to use their money to do the talking.
A very clear and large drop off in physical sales, following all this backlash, while the backlash continues, is more than enough to get SNY's attention. It will let them know that their foundational fans will not put up with it and will not cheerlead and back PS products going forward. Knowing what that could mean for the PS6 launch should make SNY very nervous. If it doesn't, or SNY doesn't react whatsoever to the physical sales tanking all of the sudden, while digital sales don't increase at all, then so be it. Let PS6 bomb so hard that it makes PS3 flex.
