The same could be said for many Nintendo IPs. It's not like Yoshi/Xenoblade/FE are historically huge sellers But as far as Prime 4s cost, part of that will be due to the development struggle from first being outsourced to Bandai Namco & that can be avoided in future. Elsewhere they can scale back on cinematic/VO etc. If Metroid Prime remastered didn't cost a huge amount and has fidelity not too far from 4, they can easily make Metroid Prime 5 in a reasonable budget and appeal to a different demo than their usual Nintendo IP. Nintendo has continually valued it's diversity otherwise things like Fire Emblem & Xenoblade would long ago been shelved with their sub 2m sales lol |
Although, from Iwata Asks (I believe) we did learn that Xenoblade Chronicles was more like an advanced prototype. And we do know that Xenoblade Chronicles X acted as a test bed for games like Breath of the Wild in both design and dev experience (since many Monolithsoft devs worked on Breath of the Wild). In other words, the value of some games are often larger than they appear.
I'd also argue that certain games do well to help capture audiences who (while small) might not otherwise be buying Nintendo products. Although, for Fire Emblem, this is probably less true now than it used to be, since RPGs are now plentiful on Nintendo consoles.
I describe myself as a little dose of toxic masculinity.
