I almost joined the site 20 years ago and in retrospective so much changed, espcially the 'Blu Ray' adoption threads seem all so dumb now.

Anyway in the end if people really loved physical they should have bought more but even third party companies aren't complaining.

The people who love physical have been buying it. As a lazy estimation, if a game iavailable at retail sells 10m, 3m of those millions are physical copies. This is simply me extrapolating from Sonys 4/5 digital figure and accounting for the fact the fact this includes digital only games. 

The physical market is still viable and large, but the vast majority of consumers are comfortable with digital and Sony & publishers benefit from pushing things to a monopolised digital storefront with no used market.
