Well, 1666: Amsterdam was announced at Summer Game Fest a couple of hours ago, and I decided to give a try on the Prologue, which is free on Steam and can be played here.
The game is being made by the creator of Assassin's Creed. Here is a summary (with spoilers) of my experience:
The game begins with you controlling a young woman, which I suppose is some kind of witch. You can use spells to light up flames, and there's some kind of cult happening. Once reaching a tree and lighting the flames around it, you find some cats at the branches. The game let you select a cat to be your companion. Those cats have different names (Knight, Child, Hermit, etc), but I still have no idea what effect it will have in the future, so I just choose one of them randomly.
Then, the game cuts to Present Days, where a young woman named Cleo is visiting a Professor to ask him about a strange letter from her dad, Aaron. He wrote it in some strange language with neither her, and unfortunately, neither the Professor understand, but he thinks there's something in his study that can help them.
And so... 10 minutes of boring walk and search... You have to explore the library to find the stuff you need to translate the letter.
After this suffering, we found out that Cleo has a strange pendant, and the documents reveal that with the help of "blood of a lifeline", you can activate something. What is this? Blood from your hand, of course.
Cleo slashes her palm and with her blood, the pendant lend her the power to understand the letter, and then the game takes we back to 1999.
Her father and a his girlfriend from that time are at a hotel to celebrate the new year eve for 2000. And that was a great time, I remember it very well, and... I'm old...
So, after walking for a couple of minutes up to their room, his girlfriend goes to the bathroom to put up some "magic" and asks you to find all her "magic stuff" in the chest and her bag. Again, you have to find the itens and take them to bed. Then, you will find out that his girlfriend is some kind of... Witch. Boy, I also wanna a Witch girlfriend too. What?
Well, then something really weird happens: Our poor protagonist, after some "relation" with his witch girlfriend, gets turned into a cat. You play as the cat. The controls are a bit weird, but I got used to it. Basically, you can walk, run, and jump when you see a button at some platform. To be honest, it was fun.
Then, after finding a forest by crossing some kind of portal, the cat goes back to the same scene at the beginning of the game, and we find out that the cat at the tree that we choose is actually Cleo's father. I don't know if it changes based on what cat I choose, I will check it later.
Then, our cat finds out that he is going to be this young witch companion. Then, when things are getting interesting... The Prologue ends.
After that, we see a quick teaser of the game, showing the cat's gameplay, and some action hack'n slash from the witch's gameplay.
Well, this was... Peculiar.
The gameplay did NOT convince me. The walking and interacting with objects looks very dated. Graphics are okay for current days, and I still can't make heads or tails from the story.
The best thing was the cat stuff. After Cleo's father get turned into a cat, close to the end of the Prologue, things were taking a turn for the better. But it was a very short time to compensate for the boring Adventure stuff before that.
The gameplay showed at the teaser at the ending looks promising, more action-based. But man, I really hope this demo makes no justice for what the game will deliver to us.
If you want to try the demo, link is above, and I want to know your opinions too.
