The Republicans, Trump included, are now screaming about election fraud in the California primary.
California has an open “jungle” primary system where the top two candidates advance if no candidate reaches 50 percent of the total vote.
In the governor’s race, it looks like AG Xavier Becerra (D) will face off against TV talking head Steve Hilton (R). Hilton actually has the most votes of all the candidates with 27.2%, barely edging out Becerra at 26%. However, Becerra’s vote was also split with a much more crowded Democratic field that includes billionaire Tom Steyer, who is in third place 20.2%). Congresswoman Katie Porter (4.5%, 5th), and San Jose mayor Matt Mahan (4.0%, 6th). Hilton’s only significant Republican competitor is controversial Riverside County sheriff Chad Bianco (11%, 4th). Had Porter and Mahan dropped out when they knew their numbers sucked, the race likely would have come down to Becerra vs. Steyer.
For Los Angeles mayor, incumbent Karen Bass leads with 35% of the vote and has already been called to advance to the general election. Fighting for second place are reality TV talking head Spencer Pratt, a Republican’ who is currently second with 29%, and councilwoman Nithya Raman, a Democrat with 23% of the total vote. The other candidates combined collectively received 13% of the vote.
Most of the remaining votes are mail-in ballots, which tend to skew Democratic, and Trump is using this to push for the end of voting by mail and more ominously, federalizing elections. He will really be pissed if the remaining ballots knock out Hilton and Pratt. I doubt this will happen to Hilton, but Raman does have a chance to knock Pratt out of the general election.
