I did enjoy 3D World, it just didn't quite have that ambition that I want out of a 3D Mario.
64, Galaxy 1/2, and Odyssey fired my imagination and felt like epic extravaganzas, whereas 3D World was felt comparatively safe.
Still an extremely polished and very fun game though.

Sunshine is... not my cup of tea, nor is that whole era of Nintendo frankly.

I guess what I don’t understand is how somebody could find 64 to be so good yet Sunshine not sit well with them. My first play-through of these two games was back-to-back in June 2018, and the impression I was left with was that SMSunshine was SM64 but with a much better camera, far more lenient level design, refined movement, and a nozzle on your back. It was Mario 64 but better in every single way, just without the innovative aspect.

A big part of it is that, to me, Mario 64 felt like this out-of-this-world epic where you go to all these different and varied worlds, whereas with its monotonous Tropical resort setting, Sunshine didn't have that diversity or that sense of adventure.
