Iwata made some very strong calls, but when it came to software, he fumbled hard. Combining the hardware divisions of handheld with home consoles was by far his best as that addressed the software struggles he was fighting. But the software he chose to develop (four NSMB games over the span of five years, launch Wii U with nothing more than NSMBU and Pikmin 3, launch 3DS with nothing more than Nintendogs and Pilot Wings, fail to maintain momentum via software when transitioning generations (Wii to Wii U, DS to 3DS, Wii U to Switch), tons of Wii series and multiplayer games, nothing ambitious (e.g. Kirby Return to Dreamland, DKC Returns, and NSMB were all *returns* to form, not revolutions like Forgotten Lands nor Bananza nor Wonder), forcing Sakurai to make a new Smash for Wii, etc etc.) was very poor.

Hard disagree because again the are factors you're overlooking such as WiiU was the jump to HD development for Nintendo which alongside having two platforms to support forced that situation as well as the figuring out of the blue ocean market, you're giving the current leadership credit for following groundwork that he laid down for them while having to come up with the solutions to problems that even the biggest competitor in gaming threw in the towel over. Following an instruction manual well doesn't make you better than the person who wrote it by default, the current leadership would need to make several impactful calls of their own like Iwata did before even being considered in his league only Yokoi and Yamauchi compare to him in that regard.
