The sales would suggest otherwise; the Zelda series has continued to sell through many visual changes, while the Mario movie's take on the character killed interest in his game incarnation. Xenoblade saw its highest selling entry when it underwent a major change in art style with Xenoblade Chronicles 2. Various games with experimental art styles such as Yoshi's Island, Kirby's Epic Yarn, and Paper Mario were accepted.
