GoldenEye 007 probably actually has had a longer lasting impact on the broad console market. You look at the top 10 game sellers to this day and there's still Call of Duty or some other FPS game at the top of the list ... GoldenEye 007 really started home multiplayer FPS as a system selling genre for consoles, before that it wasn't a huge genre outside of the PC which had DOOM.

The local multiplayer via split screen of Golden Eye 007 was a great solution to offer multiplayer FPS games on one device! Kudos for that!

Connecting two (or more) consoles/computers for local multiplayer connected to different displays in the same room (f. e. the PS1 version of Duke Nukem 3D) was always a nerdy niche solution with no appeal to the mass market.

But did Golden Eye 007 really had a long lasting impact on the broad console market?

Many console gamers already wanted FPS games before Golden Eye 007, which lead to ports of Wolfenstein 3D, Doom 1 + 2, Duke Nukem 3D, Dark Forces, Heretic and Quake to SNES, Genesis, Jaguar, 3DO, PS1, Saturn and N64.

And as soon as internet connections became more common and the new consoles (especially Xbox, but also PS2 and GameCube) supported it, multiplayer in FPS shooters shifted pretty fast from local splitscreen to online multiplayer.

I would say, Halo had the longest lasting impact for multiplayer FPS games in the broad console market.
