It was apparently actually intended to be in the games too, but Nintendo didn't get to include it for various reasons. So it might be that Nintendo used the movie to make it official.

I found the movie pretty enjoyable. It's not high art, but a perfectly serviceable popcorn movie. My only regret is that the Koopalings didn't appear in the movie, I would have loved to see them supporting Bowser junior, and Kamek is really just making a fool of himself, here I expected more from his part.

Honestly making Peach and Rosalina sisters canon wouldn't be out of place in the games. Haven't seen anything in the games that would contradict that.
