I can definitely sympathize with you on this. Super Paper Mario, for instance, is a very fun game…until you remember the previous two installments. I went in hoping to somewhat scratch that TTYD itch, and ended up dropping the game in chapter 8 after having felt so burned by the story, which felt like a huge step down.

Maybe someday you and I both will come to appreciate these black sheep entries for what they are, instead of what they are not. It’s always ideal to enjoy game than it is to not, after all.

Yeah I feel you, haha! If you want the full Paper Mario RPG experience you've been out of luck (except for the TTYD remake) for... what? 15 years? Crazy. Nintendo is really baffling at times with their mantra of "new games in a series must offer some new gameplay thingy". I'm still waiting for a proper, non-gimped, sequel to Starfox 64.

Well the good news for me is that I’ve never play the original Paper Mario, and we also now have Bug Fables & Escape from Ever After— two games which are hailed by their respective communities (98% Recommend on Steam). As far as StarFox is concerned, I actually just purchased Ex-Zodiac for $4USD on Steam. Sounds like a solid homage to SF from everything I’ve heard.
