It's a fair and valid point, but co-development realy blurrys the line. First/second party are both valid for Bloodborne/Demon's Souls. About Death Stranding. Indeed, it's even more complex, but i feel like your conclusions nail everything perfectly. |
I can see Demon's Souls being considered first party but as that kind of game was mainly From Software stile I think Sony more comissioned and helped them with it than anything else.
When you see Demon's Souls is clearly a King's Field evolution is hard to not credit From Software as the main developer.
So I would rather consider it second party myself.
I do consider Crash Bandicoot as first party tho, even when Universal owned the IP and Naughty Dog was not yet a Sony studio, it's so ingrained as the PS1 mascot, which Sony promoted, and Naughty Dog was pretty much always a Sony studio regardless, so even if it is a similar scenario that Spyro was, Sony did bought Naughty Dog right after the Crash deal moved back to Universal opposed to Insomniac only recently. The people that developed Crash were basically because of it, and since it, a Sony studio in practice, so to me it is first party, while Spyro is third party.
