Game development seems tough. You invest a ton of money and spend years developing a product that may not even make it to store shelves. There is a large influx of revenue with initial launch sales of the title. Royalties probably start to dwindle even if the game has good legs because the average sale price likely goes down.

As mush as people hate live service games, they provide chances for a continuous revenue stream that can be boosted with new content that take less time to develop.

Singleplayer studios need ways of bringing in revenue in between titles. I still blame Sony mismanagement for this.
