If the article is right 2027 is the current target but with how things are looking the market will probably still be pretty fucked by November that year so a delay would make a lot of sense though I do hope it's 2028 cause 8 years would already be pushing it with no new console. Way, way better RT and upscaling capabilities is gonna do wonders for the PS6.
Another thing is when the PS6 comes up as a topic there's generally a lot of people saying there's no "need" for it to release anytime soon which is strange since there doesn't have to be a need. 2027 would be completely fine without the current market situation since the PS5 should be supported long into the life of the PS6. It's not like there's a need for new smartphones to release every single year but it's good that they do so that people who want the cutting edge can always have it.

I'm aware PS5 Pro isn't cutting edge compared to Gaming PCs, but it is the cutting edge for consoles.
I see no need to launch PS6 in November 2027 just so cutting edge early adopters can get it. PS5 Pro already exists, as I said.
PlayStation has never gone more than 7 years without a brand new console, I get it. But Nintendo and Xbox have before. Now is as good a time as any to wait 7.5-9 years to replace PS5 with PS6.

But why does do you think there has to be a need? There's no need for the PS5 Pro but it's good that it exists so people don't have to wait longer to get a better console. In these circumstances 2028 will probably make more sense but if things were normal I don't see how 2027 would be a bad thing since if someone didn't wanna buy a PS6 by the end of next year they just need to keep using their PS5 until they do since 99.9% of games that release on the former will also be releasing on the latter for years.
AI is an enormous wildcard right now in terms of how big the impact will be in the next 5-10 years but in general the days of huge leaps that make the previous console obsolete from day 1 are over so console release timing being tied to when there's a need for more powerful hardware to run games doesn't work now. It makes far more sense now to tie it to when sales of the current platform are slowing down a lot and the PS5 could potentially drop under 10m next year so from that angle 2027 would've been ideal in normal circumstances.

There doesn't have to be a need but a new platform does shift resources and attention.
Holistically I think it will be healthier for the whole industry to double down on the hardware in front of them for a while longer.
-From a user experience better optimised games/engines for the vast majority who will clearly be sticking with PS5 for a while -From a developer perspective not throwing in yet another platform they need to build for (cheaper)... but if they do Ideally a platform that can reach new gamers and or increase engagement (handheld) -Expanding audiences in other, more interesting ways then just RT/Upscaling (Peripherals/new game ideas etc) -Fine tuning hardware features (potentially taking advantage of later AMD architecture learning to make a more solid PS6 experience) -Less FOMO and negative sentiment from the general public who I think mostly feel it "feels" too early, likely because of lengthier development cycles.
Now I do hear you about giving premium users what they want and probably 2028 is the right time, but I don't think PS5 Pro has really come into its own yet. PSSR2 update could be game changing and we could get way more games that actually fulfil the promise Ala Assassins Creed- RT at 60fps with better image quality. Again the gulf between PC and Console is actually the smallest its ever been this late into a generation.

Probably healthier to give it an extra year with what's going on but otherwise I don't see the point since cross-gen is gonna be the norm going forward so developers are gonna be sticking with the PS5 and PS5 Pro for a long time still either way. It'll likely still be playing many if not post AAA games that come out in 2032 after all. If the PS6 did release in 2027 that would just shift the year support drops off forward one which isn't a big deal with how long it'd still be.
If anything I'd prefer if mid-gen refreshes happened more often since new GPUs come out every 1-2 years so if there wasn't a huge stock issue for a good while at the start of this generation then there could've been a more powerful PS5 released in 2022 as well which would've been a nice option for some people picking one up that holiday or throughout 2023. Following that up with another more powerful one in 2024 and then the PS6 in 2027 would've been pretty ideal in the right circumstances I think.
