| Norion said: If the article is right 2027 is the current target but with how things are looking the market will probably still be pretty fucked by November that year so a delay would make a lot of sense though I do hope it's 2028 cause 8 years would already be pushing it with no new console. Way, way better RT and upscaling capabilities is gonna do wonders for the PS6. |
There doesn't have to be a need but a new platform does shift resources and attention.
Holistically I think it will be healthier for the whole industry to double down on the hardware in front of them for a while longer.
-From a user experience better optimised games/engines for the vast majority who will clearly be sticking with PS5 for a while
-From a developer perspective not throwing in yet another platform they need to build for (cheaper)... but if they do Ideally a platform that can reach new gamers and or increase engagement (handheld)
-Expanding audiences in other, more interesting ways then just RT/Upscaling (Peripherals/new game ideas etc)
-Fine tuning hardware features (potentially taking advantage of later AMD architecture learning to make a more solid PS6 experience)
-Less FOMO and negative sentiment from the general public who I think mostly feel it "feels" too early, likely because of lengthier development cycles.
Now I do hear you about giving premium users what they want and probably 2028 is the right time, but I don't think PS5 Pro has really come into its own yet. PSSR2 update could be game changing and we could get way more games that actually fulfil the promise Ala Assassins Creed- RT at 60fps with better image quality. Again the gulf between PC and Console is actually the smallest its ever been this late into a generation.
