Just Finished: Super Mario Sunshine HD (as part of Super Mario 3D All Stars) (Switch)

This is the only 3D Mario game I hadn't played before. I had a Gamecube but never was interested enough to pick this one up. Obviously it has a middling reputation and I have got to say that it is completely earned. I really wanted to love this game. There are moments when the platforming gameplay is absolutely brilliant. But it is clear that this game was rushed and doesn't have the level of polish found in every other 3D Mario game. The graphics and visual style hold up really well. I enjoyed playing the game both on TV and in handheld mode. The Fludd and water cleaning based gameplay is not a strong enough hook to anchor the gameplay. It is nice that Yoshi shows up and impacts gameplay. There are so many times when the finicky camera or controls led to med dying unnecessarily. The music is pretty good too I guess. It is strange that this game had so much voice acting at the time, which Nintendo has still yet to fully embrace. The secret levels where Mario doesn't have Fludd are among the most frustrating Shines to collect in the game. It makes you wonder if they even tested the game properly. Some of the bosses are fun to play. Bowser Jr.'s introduction was a welcome change for the series. I completed 64 Shines. I will never go for all 120. I saw a video of the secret ending you get if you do complete 120, and it was more underwhelming than I could ever imagine.

Score: 7/10
