Purchasing is way too expensive. So in Trumps minds it's like the following. We are going to invade Greenland, control their resources, give Greenlanders freedom from their European colonial oppressor and make the Europeans pay for it. MAGA and the Republicans will love it, also they would be delighted with the end of NATO. Even though they lose a lot more allied artic control then they now have.
