It's not even a portability vs performance issue for me; Switch 2 is more than substantial in terms of performance and power, I think. I'd be MORE than happy to sacrifice a few pixels on games like FFVII Remake or Resident Evil Requiem on Switch 2 over PS5 or PC - Not just for the portability, but for the fact that I get mainline Final Fantasy and Resident Evil on the same system as Mario and Zelda.
For me, the issue is physical vs. digital - And the storage/file space that comes with it. I have this rule with my Switch 1 (And now Switch 2) where if a game is over/under a certain GB size, I'll get it either physical or digital. At this moment, I'm still not entirely sure what that number would be for Switch 2 - But with Switch 1, it was always 10gb. Anything that's 10gb or less - Digital. Anything that was over 10gb - Physical. Since the full game is on the Switch 1 cart, I can save all that storage and still have for all the other smaller games if I buy the bigger games physical.
And I was thinking of maybe expanding that to 20-30gb for Switch 2 (Maybe 25gb is the sweet spot, I'm not sure) as games naturally get bigger as the system gets more powerful and capable... Overall, it was a rule that served me extremely well throughout the Switch 1's life cycle and was looking forward to using it again on Switch 2.
But those stupid Game Key cards completely kill that rule. Now it doesn't make a difference whether I get it digital of "physical," I still have to download the full game. And now, I have to be careful WHICH games I buy, because even with a 526gb microexpress SD card for extra storage, with all these games going for 40-50-60-80-100gb - That storage is going to fill up VERY fast!
Now for games like FFVII Remake, I can understand because that game is 90gb and, to my knowledge, the biggest size currently available for Switch 2 cartridges as 64gb. So, they'd have to cut a lot of corners just to make it work.
But for games like Sonic Racing Crossworlds, Persona 3 Reload, or the Dragon Queste 1&2 remakes - Games that are well within 64gb, that's just straight up BS. And it's just SEGA, Atlus, and Square being lazy, I feel.
