Playing more of the game, it definitely is giving me Prime 3 x Skyward Sword/Windwaker vibes.

It is pretty much a narrative focused Metroid game (in same vein as Prime 3 and Fusion) that takes the Zelda template. Desert is pretty much the sky or ocean in Skyward Sword and Windwaker respectively while each of the areas are pretty much Zelda dungeons. The psychic powers when used with motion controls even feel like Skyward Sword's.

There has always been two styles of Metroid (and arguably Castelvania games.) More exploration-based, non-linear titles and more linear, story-driven, hub-world titles that feel more like Zelda.

Personally I love both styles and can take either.

This game certainly isn't a sandbox game, which is what "open-world" tends to mean these days. So I don't get the open-world criticism.

The characters are non-issues. They basically feel like the average character in any video game.

Personally I would give this game a 9/10 so far. Definitely not the best Metroid game, but it is the best in certain areas like aesthetics (art design is wonderful and I love the music) and story-telling (right balancing of scanning and cutscenes.)

My guess is this game will be appreciated more for what it is 3-5 years from now.

So the game features dungeons and you only get to explore them? You can backtrac to explore new elements of the dungeons once you unlock new skills?
